Devin Desktop has been the new name of Windsurf since June 2, 2026. It is software for writing code, installed on your computer. You describe what you want, and an agent reads your files, writes the code, and runs the commands, with your approval. A dashboard shows all the agents at work, on your computer or in the cloud.
Devin Desktop has a free plan. The recommended plan to start with: Free, $0. Prices checked on October 3, 2026 on the vendor’s official page.

What Devin Desktop does
Who it’s for: developers first, and curious people who are willing to see code in order to build a small tool.
The local agent: it codes in your folder
“Devin Local” reads your files, writes the code, and runs the commands on your computer. It replaces Cascade, Windsurf’s agent. You set what it can do on its own, what it must ask for, and what it is forbidden to do.
Plan mode: a plan before acting
The agent reads the project without changing anything, proposes an approach, and waits for your approval. You correct the plan before a single line is written.
The agent command center
A board with columns shows all your agents by status: in progress, waiting for your reply, done. “Spaces” group the sessions, files, and context of a single project. Other agents, such as Claude Agent or Codex, can be plugged in.

Devin Desktop pricing
Prices published in dollars. The quota has replaced credits since March 2026: it refills every day and every week. Former Windsurf subscribers keep their price ($15 per month for Pro). The Pro plan advertises free use of the “SWE-2 Free” model until October 16, 2026.

What the free plan includes
Yes. A small quota for putting the agents to work, a limited choice of AI models, and with no limit: Tab completion and edits with Command. When the quota runs out, you have to wait for it to refill.
Nova’s advice
Stay on the free plan while you are getting to know it: Tab and Command are not limited. Take Pro if you use the agent every day, or if you want agents in the cloud. Max is only worth it for a full-time developer.
A first try, in 15 minutes
Your data. By default, on the Free, Pro, and Max plans, your data may be used to train the vendor’s AI models. You can opt out.
What it does less well
It is a developer tool. You will see code, files, and sometimes error messages. To build a tool without seeing any of that, Lovable, Bolt, or Base44 are a better fit.
The agent makes mistakes: code that does not work the first time, a file changed by mistake. Review what it proposes before accepting, and work on a copy.
Have a small calculator page builtDevin Desktop
Create an empty folder on your computer and open it in Devin Desktop with “New Project.”
The agent panel is on the right side. Paste the prompt below and send.
The agent announces what it is going to do. When it asks for permission to create a file or run a command, read the line, then accept.
Ask it: “Show a preview of the site.” The page opens in the app or in your browser.
To fix a detail, click “Send element” at the bottom right of the preview, then the element to change. Write what you want instead.
The prompt to copy
Create a simple web page, in English, that calculates the price of a quote: a quantity, a unit price, a percentage discount, and 20% VAT. Show the total excl. tax and the total incl. tax, updated on every input. A single HTML file, with nothing to install. Then explain to me how to open it.
Free: $0; Pro: $20 per month; Max: $200 per month; Teams: $80 for the team + $40 per developer per month; Enterprise: custom pricing. Prices checked on October 3, 2026 on the vendor’s official page.

What are the alternatives to Devin Desktop?
Cursor: The direct competitor: a code editor where agents develop for you. GitHub Copilot: If your team already works in VS Code and on GitHub. Claude Code: Anthropic’s agent, with a “Code” tab that avoids the terminal. Codex: OpenAI’s agent, included in ChatGPT subscriptions. Lovable: If you do not want to see code: you describe, and the app is built and published.
