What LanguageTool does

Who it’s for: anyone who writes emails, meeting notes, or posts in French or in several languages and wants a quick proofread.

Correct spelling, grammar, and style

LanguageTool underlines mistakes and offers the correction in one click. It also catches errors an ordinary spell checker lets through: agreement, commas, confused words, awkward phrasing.

Rephrase a sentence

You select a sentence, and LanguageTool suggests other versions: simpler, smoother, more polished. You choose the one that works for you.

Corrections everywhere in the browser

With the extension, mistakes are underlined wherever you write: webmail, LinkedIn, forms, internal tools. No more copying and pasting.

Also

  • The Mac and Windows apps
  • Personal dictionary and style guide
  • Translate without switching windows
  • Draft and rework with AI
  • The editor and its statistics

What the free plan includes

The checker and the rephrasing tool on the website: 2,000 characters per text and 3 rephrasings per day. The Mac and Windows apps have a free version that corrects basic mistakes.

Nova’s advice

Start with the free website to proofread your important emails. Go for yearly Premium if you want corrections right in your browser and your apps, with no copying and pasting: that’s where the tool becomes truly practical. Avoid paying monthly, which costs four times more over a year.

Your data. Your texts are sent to LanguageTool’s servers to be corrected, over an encrypted connection, and are not used to train AI.

What it does less well

  • The browser extension, which made the tool popular, is now reserved for Premium subscribers according to the help center. Without a subscription, you’re left with the website.
  • The free plan stops at 2,000 characters per text and 3 rephrasings per day. A ten-page report has to be pasted in pieces.
