Slack (AI features) pricing, use cases, and first steps

Slack is a team messaging app: channels by topic, direct messages, calls. This page doesn’t cover all of Slack, only what AI adds to it. It summarizes a channel or a thread, prepares a morning recap, answers a question from the team’s messages, translates, and takes notes during a call. A personal assistant, “Slackbot,” also acts at your request.

Slack (AI features) has a free plan. Prices checked on October 3, 2026 on the vendor’s official page.

What Slack (AI features) does

Who it’s for: Teams that already use Slack every day and are buried under unread messages.

Summarize a channel, a conversation, or a thread

Slack reads the messages for you and pulls out the essentials. You choose the period. Each point in the summary links back to the original messages, so you can check.

The morning recap

A personalized summary of the channels you haven’t read, prepared every day. You choose which channels are in it.

Ask search a question

You type a full question in the search bar. Slack writes a short answer from the messages and files you have access to, with its sources.

Also

  • Slackbot, your personal assistant
  • Tasks Slackbot runs on its own
  • Notes from a huddle
  • Translate a message, summarize a file

What the free plan includes

Free Slack keeps 90 days of history. On the AI side, it gives only a limited preview of Slackbot: when it runs out, you need to move to a paid plan.

Nova’s advice

The choice isn’t yours: your company’s plan decides what you see. With Pro, start using channel summaries now; it’s the most useful feature. If your team is hesitating to upgrade, keep in mind that Slackbot, recaps, and written search answers start at Business+, and that Slackbot is limited to 15 messages per week there.

A first try, in 3 minutes

Your data. Slack states that your messages are never used to train AI models and that they don’t leave its infrastructure.

What it does less well

  • Almost everything depends on your company’s plan. With free Slack, there is almost no AI. With Pro, only summaries and call notes.
  • Slackbot is limited to 15 messages per week with Business+. The counter resets on Monday. That’s not much for daily use.
