Microsoft Copilot pricing, use cases, and first steps

Copilot is Microsoft’s assistant. It comes in two forms. The first is a free chat app, on the web, on your computer, and on your phone. The second, Microsoft 365 Copilot, works inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, with your files, your emails, and your meetings.

Microsoft Copilot has a free plan. The recommended plan to start with: Microsoft 365 Personal, €10 per month, or €99 per year. Prices checked on October 5, 2026 on the vendor’s official page.

What Microsoft Copilot does

Who it’s for: anyone whose company works with Outlook, Teams, Word, and Excel.

Summarize a Teams meeting

During the meeting, Copilot tells you what was decided and who said what, and answers your questions. Afterward, the “Recap” tab keeps the summary and the action items, if transcription was turned on.

Sort and write in Outlook

It summarizes a long thread, drafts a reply, and coaches you on the tone of a message. It can also file, move, or delete emails, asking you to confirm first.

Analyze a spreadsheet in Excel

You ask your question in plain language. It writes the formula, does the calculation, creates the chart, and shows you the cells it changed.

Also

  • Write in Word, present in PowerPoint
  • Ask questions about your work data
  • Researcher and Analyst
  • Cowork: delegate a whole task
  • Talk to Copilot, show it your screen

What the free plan includes

The Copilot app: chat, image creation, file uploads, and voice, with limits that depend on demand. At work, “Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat” is included at no extra cost in eligible Microsoft 365 subscriptions.

Nova’s advice

At work, don’t pay for anything yourself: first check what your company has turned on. Copilot Chat is included in eligible Microsoft 365 subscriptions, and the Microsoft 365 Copilot license is your employer’s decision. For personal use, the free version is enough for chatting; Microsoft 365 Personal at €10 per month adds Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Free or paid: how usage is counted

Chatting is free. To get Copilot in Word, Excel, and Outlook, you need a Microsoft 365 subscription.

A first try, in 5 minutes

Your data. It all depends on the account: with a work account, your data is not used to train AI; with a personal account, it can be, unless you opt out in the settings.

What it does less well

  • The names are confusing: Copilot (free), Copilot Chat (included at work), Microsoft 365 Copilot (paid license). What you can do depends on which one you have. And the “Microsoft 365 Copilot” app is becoming “Microsoft Copilot”: the stores still show the old name.
  • Without a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, the chat reads neither your emails nor your files: it relies on the web and on what you attach.
Take stock of your weekMicrosoft Copilot
  1. Open copilot.cloud.microsoft with your work account.
  2. Type your request in the “Message Copilot” box, then send it.
  3. Open the sources cited under the answer to check a point.
  4. Without a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, it does not read your emails: attach meeting notes with the + button instead and ask for a summary.

The prompt to copy

Summarize this week’s emails and meetings that concern me. List what is expected of me, with the deadlines.
