AI reads reports and press releases faster than you do, but it doesn’t know what a number changes in your thesis. It digs through, checks, and formats: the analysis and the recommendation stay yours.

Gemini Notebook for financial analysts: query a company’s annual reports, step by step

  • 20 min
  • every week

What to check

Import only published documents. The notebook can misread a table laid out in two columns: open the passage before you use a number.

Query a company’s annual reportsGemini Notebook · One notebook per company
  1. In Gemini Notebook, create a notebook named after the company and import its annual reports and earnings presentations as PDFs.
  2. In the “Chat” panel, paste the prompt below.
  3. Click the number shown in the answer: the passage from the report opens alongside.
  4. Carry over to your model only the numbers you have reread in the document.

The prompt to copy

Using only the documents in this notebook, trace the change in [operating margin by division] over [five] fiscal years. Present a table: fiscal year, division, revenue, operating income, margin, with the report page for each number. Flag any change in scope, accounting method, or division breakdown that makes two years not comparable. If a number isn’t published, write “not published” instead of calculating it.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • Inside information: no non-public information about a listed company in a tool your compliance team hasn’t approved. Never on a personal account.
  • Every number is recalculated from the original document. An assistant can misread a table, or confuse a reported number with an adjusted one.
  • The recommendation and the price target commit you and your firm: AI formats; you analyze and you sign, with the regulatory disclosures.
  • Your vendors’ data (prices, consensus, estimates) is licensed: check that the contract allows you to upload it to another tool.

Never hand this to AI

  • Setting a recommendation, a forecast, or a price target.
  • A consensus or market number given by an assistant, with no source you have opened.
  • What management told you in a private meeting, in a consumer tool.
