AI training for journalists

AI does not go into the field, does not corroborate, and does not take a byline. It prepares your news monitoring, transcribes, digs through documents and data, and lists what is still to be verified. Information is always verified at the source, and you are the one who answers for it.

What to check

It builds the list, it verifies nothing: you are the one who goes back to the source. In incognito mode, the conversation is never used for training. Remove the name of a protected source before pasting the text.

List the facts to verify before deadlineClaude · Incognito chat
  1. In Claude, open an incognito chat and paste the prompt below, then your article.
  2. Go through the table row by row, with your notes, your recordings, and your documents in front of you.
  3. Check off each fact verified at the original source. Correct or remove the others.
  4. Redo each calculation yourself: percentage, change, average.

The prompt to copy

Here is an article before publication: [paste the text]. Do not rewrite it. Build a table of everything that can be verified: each proper name with its spelling, each position or title, each age, each date, each place, each number with its unit, each percentage with the numbers it is derived from, each quote with the person it is attributed to, each statement that implicates someone. For each row: the passage, what needs to be verified, and the type of source that makes it possible. Flag internal inconsistencies: two numbers that do not agree, a total that does not add up, an impossible date. Do not verify anything yourself and do not state that a fact is accurate.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • Source protection: no name, no entrusted document, no sensitive recording in an online tool. For these stories, work with a tool that stays on your computer.
  • An assistant can invent a quote, a study, a position, or a number: nothing is published without the original source in front of you.
  • A quote is verified by listening to the recording, and an allegation is reviewed with the editor-in-chief before publication.
  • Follow your newsroom’s policy on the use of AI, and tell the reader how it was used when it weighed on the work.

Never hand this to AI

  • Having it write the article for you: a generated text has no field reporting, no corroboration, and no author to answer for it.
  • Treating what an assistant states as verified, even with a link: a cited link is not a corroborated fact.
  • Illustrating a real fact with a generated image or voice that could pass for a document.
