AI training for architects

AI doesn’t design the project or sign the permit. It lightens what surrounds design: reading a zoning code, writing a project description or site meeting notes, comparing bids, showing the client a mood from the first sketch.

What to check

The written code isn’t enough: check the zoning map, the easements, the hazards, and the latest amendment to the code at the town hall. The tool can miss an exception: commit to a feasibility only after rereading each article.

List the zoning rules for a lotGemini Notebook · “Chat” panel
  1. Download the written zoning code (the PLU in France) from the municipality’s website. Open Gemini Notebook, create a notebook for the project, and import the PDF.
  2. In the “Chat” panel, paste the prompt below, with the zone and the lot area.
  3. Click the number next to each rule: the article opens in the document. Reread it in full, exceptions included.
  4. Complete it with the zoning map, the easements, and the hazards, then have the planning department confirm the sensitive points.

The prompt to copy

Using only the documents in this notebook, list the rules that apply to a lot of [area] m² located in zone [UB], for a [single-family house] project. Give in a table: permitted and prohibited uses; setbacks from streets and from side and rear lot lines; lot coverage; maximum height and how it is measured; required parking; green space and unpaved ground; exterior appearance, roofs, and fences. For each rule, cite the article and the page, and copy the exact sentence. Flag the rules that refer to another document I need to consult.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • You sign and you are liable: plans, written documents, and opinions are checked and approved by the architect, never by a tool.
  • A zoning rule or a standard is read at the source and in its current version: the zoning code at the town hall, official texts, codes of practice, the building control firm’s opinion.
  • A client’s documents (plans, address, budget, contractors’ bids) are confidential: the firm’s workspace, or files with no name.
  • A generated image shows a mood, not the project: tell the client so and don’t add it to a permit application.

Never hand this to AI

  • Structural, thermal, or fire safety calculations: they are for the engineering firms and the building control firm.
  • Choosing a contractor and accepting the completed work: AI compares, you advise, the owner decides.
  • Certifying an area, a dimension, or compliance based on an assistant’s answer.
