AI training for photographers

AI doesn’t take your photos. It lightens everything around them: quotes, contracts, shoot prep, cutouts, captions, posts. And it brings a new rule: tell the client what was retouched or generated.

What to check

It sometimes gets an addition wrong: recalculate the total. The mandatory information on a quote depends on your business status: check it once with your accountant.

Price and write the quote for a shootClaude · Word file created in the conversation
  1. In Claude, paste the client’s request and the prompt below, with your rates.
  2. Answer its questions, then check every line: it adds up what you give it, it doesn’t know your prices.
  3. Ask: “Give me a Word file,” and put it on your letterhead.
  4. Recalculate the total and the VAT yourself before you send it.

The prompt to copy

You are helping me write a freelance photographer’s quote. The request: [paste the client’s message]. My rates: [shooting, per day or per half day], [culling and retouching, per hour or per image], [travel], [options: second photographer, online gallery, prints, album]. My status: [sole proprietor with no VAT, or VAT at 20%]. Present the quote item by item: preparation, shooting, culling and retouching, delivery, travel, options. Add a “usage rights” line that specifies the media, the duration, and the territory: [the client’s website and social media, 2 years, France]. State the number of images delivered, the delivery time, the [30%] deposit, and how long the quote is valid. Then write the cover message, in five sentences, warm and specific. Don’t make up any price: ask me a question if a rate is missing.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • Image rights come first: a written release for every recognizable person, before anything is published. A client’s photo is personal data, not to be uploaded to a tool that trains on it or makes it public.
  • Tell the client what was retouched or generated by AI, and write it in the quote. For press, contests, and any image that serves as evidence, generative retouching is off-limits.
  • You remain the author of your photos. A generated image is not a photograph: don’t sell it as one, and check the tool’s license before any commercial use.
  • Usage license, model release, contract: AI prepares a draft, a lawyer or your professional association reviews it before signing.

Never hand this to AI

  • Altering a person’s face or body without their permission.
  • Presenting a generated image as a photograph you took.
  • Sending photos of a wedding or of children to a free tool whose privacy settings you haven’t checked.
