What to check

An old script often contains a plaintext password or key: remove them before pasting, and change them if they are still active.

Understand an inherited script or scheduled taskClaude
  1. Copy the script. Replace server names, IP addresses, and accounts with generic names. Delete every password and every key.
  2. Open claude.ai, paste the prompt below, then the script right after it.
  3. Ask your follow-up questions: “What happens if the network share is unavailable?”
  4. Ask: “Give me this explanation as a Word file,” and store it with the script.

The prompt to copy

You are an experienced systems administrator. Explain this [PowerShell, Bash, batch] script found on [type of server], launched by a scheduled task [frequency]. I want: what it does in five sentences, then block by block; what it modifies or deletes; the permissions it assumes; what happens on error; the risks (plaintext password, hard-coded path, deletion with no check). Finally, tell me what to verify before disabling or migrating it. If you don’t know a command, say so instead of guessing. Here is the script:

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • No AI-suggested command runs in production until it has been read, understood, and tested on a test machine, with a rollback planned.
  • No passwords, keys, certificates, IP addresses, or server names in a prompt. Replace them with generic names before pasting a script, a configuration, or a log.
  • Logs and account lists contain personal data: they stay in the company’s tools, or go through an AI model installed on your computer.
  • You remain responsible for what you run with your administrator rights. Information about a product gets checked on its vendor’s website.

Never hand this to AI

  • Giving an AI agent administrator access to the directory, the firewalls, or the backups.
  • Pasting a full firewall configuration, a directory export, or a password file into an online assistant.
  • Running a delete, format, or permission-change command you couldn’t explain.
