AI training for auditors

AI does not form an opinion and does not sign a report. It prepares the analytical review, reads through the minutes, writes the narrative of an interview and the first draft of the summary memo. Your time goes to professional judgment and the areas of risk.

What to check

The research covers the industry and public information. Nothing the client has entrusted to you goes into the prompt. The risk assessment for the engagement remains yours. The free plan gives one “Research” report per month.

  2. Paste the prompt below, describing the industry. Use only public information.

  4. Compare the risks listed with what the client tells you, then carry the ones that hold up into your client understanding memo.

The prompt to copy

I am preparing the statutory audit of a [road freight company, 150 employees, in France]. Give me an overview of this industry: how the economics work, cost structure, indicators the industry tracks, industry-specific regulations, trends over the last two years. Then list the risks of misstatement in the financial statements that are typical of this industry, by cycle: revenue, fixed assets, payroll, provisions, off-balance-sheet commitments. Give the source and date of each piece of information. End with fifteen questions to ask management at the first meeting.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • Professional secrecy: no client document in a personal assistant account. Use the firm’s team workspace, where content is not used for training, and replace the client’s name with a code.
  • AI prepares, the auditor concludes, the signing partner decides. The opinion, the materiality threshold, and the choice of procedures are matters of professional judgment.
  • An assistant’s answer is not audit evidence. What goes into the file is the original document and your own check, both documented.
  • Any figure taken from an assistant is reconciled with the trial balance or the financial statements. A standard is read in its current version.

Never hand this to AI

  • Concluding on a cycle or on the financial statements from an AI summary, without having seen the supporting documents.
  • Uploading a client’s trial balance, ledger, or contracts to a free tool, or to a tool the firm has not approved.
  • Letting an assistant set the materiality threshold or choose the items to test on its own.
