AI training for musicians

AI doesn’t compose for you, and what it produces on its own doesn’t necessarily belong to you. It’s useful for hearing an arrangement idea fast, and above all for lightening everything that isn’t music: outreach, grant applications, the tech rider, contracts to understand, posters.

Claude for musicians: write to a booker, step by step

What to check

Write only to the booking addresses the venue publishes, one message at a time: a mass mailing ends up in spam and hurts your name.

Write to a bookerClaude
  1. Before you write, look at the venue’s recent lineup and note two artists close to your style.
  2. In Claude, paste the prompt below with these notes, your project, and your listening links.
  3. Delete any sentence you wouldn’t say on the phone, and keep the plainest subject line.
  4. Send one message per venue, from your own address. Note the date so you can follow up just once.

The prompt to copy

You’re helping me write to the person who books [a 150-capacity venue, a festival]. What I know about their lineup: [two artists who played there recently, the venue’s character]. My project: [lineup, style, where we’re from, some news: a release, a tour]. What I’m proposing: [a date or a period, the set length, the format]. Write a message of 120 words at most: a first sentence that shows I know the venue, the project in two sentences with no superlatives, the concrete proposal, a listening link [link] and a live video [link], my availability. No attachment. Suggest three subject lines under 50 characters, and a three-line follow-up to send in ten days.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • You remain the author: what a tool composes or writes on its own isn’t necessarily protected by copyright. Before you register or release a track that contains generated passages, check the rules of your performing rights organization and your distributor.
  • Upload only your own recordings to a music generator: never another musician’s voice or playing without their consent, never a work you don’t hold the rights to.
  • A demo, lyrics, or an unsigned contract are confidential: look at what the tool does with your content before you hand it over.
  • A grant application and a contract commit you: figures, dates, and clauses get reread at the source, and a contract gets reviewed by your union, your performing rights organization, or a lawyer.

Never hand this to AI

  • Imitating the voice, the style, or the name of an existing artist.
  • Releasing a generated track as is and presenting it as your composition.
  • Deciding to sign a contract on the strength of a summary.
