AI training for translators

AI doesn’t sign your translations. It prepares a first draft, finds a term in the client’s documentation, checks an expression, and proofreads with a cold eye. The meaning, the tone, and responsibility for the delivered text remain yours.

What to check

Ask for the client’s consent before giving their text to an online tool: many contracts forbid it. In “Settings,” “Privacy,” check that your conversations are not used for training. An assistant lets errors through and flags false ones: it doesn’t replace your own review.

Do a bilingual review before deliveryClaude · “Projects”: one project per client
  1. In Claude’s left sidebar, open “Projects,” then “+ New project.” Name it after the client and add their glossary and style guide.
  2. In a conversation in the project, click the + button and attach the source text and your translation.
  3. Paste the prompt below. Go through the table row by row: you accept or dismiss each comment.
  4. Make the corrections in your translation tool, then run the English version through Antidote’s corrector for grammar and typography.

The prompt to copy

You are a reviser of translations from [Spanish] into [English], in the field of [field]. Here are the source text and my translation. Compare them sentence by sentence and flag in a table: omissions and additions, mistranslations, numbers, dates, units, and percentages that differ, lost negations, proper nouns and references copied incorrectly, terms that don’t follow the project glossary. For each discrepancy: the source sentence, my sentence, the problem, a suggested correction. Don’t rewrite what is correct and don’t touch the style. If you’re unsure, say so instead of deciding.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • Confidentiality: get written consent from the client or the agency before giving a text to an online tool. Unsigned contracts, unpublished patents, medical records, and court filings don’t go there.
  • Say whether you use machine translation. If the contract forbids it, don’t use it, even for a first draft.
  • A fluent translation is not an accurate translation. Numbers, negations, units, proper nouns: everything gets checked against the original.
  • You deliver, you answer for the text. A translation certified by a sworn translator carries their signature: AI can help proofread, never certify.

Never hand this to AI

  • Delivering a machine first draft without reworking it sentence by sentence.
  • Putting a confidential text or personal data into a free plan: at several vendors, these texts are used for training.
  • Settling a legal, medical, or regulatory term on an assistant’s answer alone, with no official source.
