Canva pricing, use cases, and first steps

Canva is an online design tool. You start from a ready-made template—poster, presentation, social post, video, or document—and edit it with the mouse. Its assistant, “Canva AI,” creates a design, an image, a text, or a short clip from a simple description, and the result stays editable.

Canva has a free plan. The recommended plan to start with: Canva Free, €0. Prices checked on October 3, 2026 on the vendor’s official page.

What Canva does

Who it’s for: anyone who has to produce a visual for work: a social post, a poster, a brochure, a presentation.

Canva AI: describe a design and get it

You write what you need. Canva suggests complete designs, which you then edit like any other design: text, colors, images.

Magic Write: write inside the design

You ask for a text, and it is written directly in your visual or document. You can teach it your brand’s tone by giving it examples of your writing.

Create an image from a description

You describe the image, choose a style, and Canva generates several. You place the one that fits in your design.

Also

  • Generate a short video clip
  • Resize, translate, remove background
  • Brand Kit: everything in your brand’s colors
  • Canva Code: a small interactive page

Canva pricing

Prices taken from Canva’s French page, which shows only the yearly price and advertises at least 16% savings compared with monthly payment. The Standard, Premium, and Ultra AI tools do not use up your allowance at the same rate. Schools and nonprofits can get most paid tools for free.

What the free plan includes

More than 1.6 million templates, 5 GB of storage, one Brand Kit limited to three colors, and up to 20 AI uses.

Nova’s advice

Stay on the free plan as long as you create a visual now and then: it is enough. Move to Pro if you often adapt your visuals to several formats or if you run out of AI uses. If your company already has Canva, ask for a seat in its workspace rather than paying yourself.

Free or paid: how usage is counted

Each AI creation counts as one use. Your allowance resets every month.

A first try, in 5 minutes

Your data. By default, Canva does not use your content to improve its AI: you would have to allow it yourself.

What it does less well

  • The AI can make mistakes: inaccurate text, a botched face, a typo in a headline. Review everything before publishing.
  • You own your designs, but Canva guarantees no exclusive rights to an AI-generated design: a similar result may come out for someone else.

  3. Look at the suggestions and open the one you like.
  4. Click the headline to rewrite it. Click a color to change it: everything stays editable.
  5. Download the visual, or share it by link with a colleague for review.

The prompt to copy

Create a LinkedIn banner to announce the opening of our Lyon office on January 12. Understated style, midnight blue and white. A short headline, the date clearly visible, room for the logo on the left.
