What to check

Amounts raised and prices change fast, and Perplexity can cite outdated information: check each company’s website before you put it in your deck. The free plan gives one “Research” report per month.

Map your competitors and their fundingPerplexity · “Research”
  1. In Perplexity, click in the search field, open the mode selector, and choose “Research.”
  2. Paste the prompt below.
  3. Click each number to open the source. Try the two products closest to yours yourself.
  4. File the report in a project, under “Projects,” then “+ New project,” to come back to it every quarter.

The prompt to copy

My startup helps [type of customer] to [outcome], through [approach]. Map the competition in [Europe and North America]. Three groups: direct competitors, substitutes used today (spreadsheet, service provider, general-purpose software), players that could move in. For each company: founding year, country, target customers, public pricing, funds raised with the date and the investors, what sets it apart. Give the source and the date of each piece of information, and write “not found” rather than estimating. End with what no one offers yet, and the possible reasons why.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • The numbers you give an investor, a bank, or your cofounders commit you. No number written by AI goes out until you have recalculated it from your books.
  • Term sheet, shareholders’ agreement, employment contract, terms of service: AI prepares your questions, an attorney reviews, you sign.
  • Your users’ and pilot customers’ data is personal data. It goes neither into a public prototype nor into a consumer assistant.
  • Before you put your numbers, your roadmap, or your code into a tool, opt out of training in its settings.

Never hand this to AI

  • Letting AI fill your deck with market or results figures you can’t source.
  • Opening an app built by describing it to real customers, with their real data, without having a developer review it.
  • Sending an investor or a candidate a generated message you haven’t rewritten.
