AI training for small business owners

AI does not decide for you. It reads a contract before you do, prepares a meeting, keeps an eye on your competitors, and makes sense of your numbers, so you arrive informed where a call has to be made.

What to check

A summary replaces neither reading the flagged clauses nor an attorney’s opinion on a contract that commits the company. Use a Team workspace, or remove the other party’s name.

Read a contract before you sign itClaude · An attached file, in the conversation
  1. In Claude, click the + button at the bottom left of the message box, then “Add files or photos,” and attach the contract as a PDF.
  2. Paste the prompt below, stating who is offering you this contract.
  3. Open the contract to the pages cited and read each flagged clause yourself.
  4. Send the list of points to your attorney, or negotiate them directly if the stakes are low.

The prompt to copy

I run a small business in [industry, headcount]. Here is a contract that [a supplier, a customer, a landlord] is asking me to sign. Summarize it in one page: what I commit to, what the other party commits to, the term, the exit and renewal conditions, the prices and how they are revised, the penalties and the liability caps. Give the article and page number for each point. Then list the five clauses least favorable to me, and what I could ask for instead. Flag what is missing from a contract of this type. You are not my attorney: indicate the points to take to them.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • Your financials, your contracts, and your employees’ data do not go into a free personal account. Get a team workspace, where content is not used for training, or remove the names and amounts.
  • AI informs, you decide. A hire, an investment, ending a contract: the decision and the signature stay yours, and every number cited to a banker is checked in your financial statements.
  • A contract, or an employment or tax matter, gets reviewed by your attorney or your accountant before it commits the company.
  • Tell your teams which tools are allowed and with which data. Without a rule, everyone uses their personal account.

Never hand this to AI

  • Deciding on a dismissal, a disciplinary measure, or someone’s pay based on an assistant’s answer.
  • Signing a contract because the summary seemed reassuring, without reading the flagged clauses.
  • Pasting a plan to sell the company, make an acquisition, or raise funds into a consumer assistant.
