What to check

Perplexity can misread a page or confuse two companies with the same name: open the links that matter before you cite a fact in a meeting.

Prepare for a first meeting with a prospectPerplexity
  1. Open perplexity.ai and paste the prompt below into the search field, with the company’s name.
  2. In the answer, click the small numbers: each one opens the page the information comes from.
  3. Ask a follow-up question, for example: “What have they announced on this topic in the past year?”
  4. Check two or three sources, then keep the questions that will really help you.

The prompt to copy

I am an independent consultant in [specialty]. I am meeting [the person’s role] at [company name] on [date], for a first conversation. Prepare a one-page brief: business, size, organization, news from the last twelve months, likely challenges in my field. Give the source and date of each point, and write “not found” rather than guessing. End with seven open-ended questions to ask to understand their need, and three mistakes to avoid in this first conversation.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • Every project has its confidentiality clause. Before you upload a client document to an assistant, check what the contract allows. If it is not clear, remove the names and the figures.
  • The client pays for your judgment. AI prepares the material: the analysis, the recommendations, and what you sign stay yours. If a client asks how you work, just tell them.
  • A figure or a study goes into a deliverable only after you have read the original source.
  • Tell the other person before any automatic note-taking during a meeting.

Never hand this to AI

  • Delivering generated text as is: a generic report gives itself away, and your reputation is on the line.
  • Mixing two clients’ documents in the same folder or the same conversation.
  • Choosing your business structure, your VAT scheme, or your social contributions on the strength of an assistant’s answer alone: see an accountant.
