AI training for webmasters

AI takes on what repeats: turning a press release into a web page, describing thirty images, filling in a redirect table. You keep what carries responsibility: what gets published, what touches the site’s code, and what the law requires.

Claude for webmasters: publish a news item from a press release, step by step

  • 10 min
  • every week

What to check

A press release that hasn’t gone out yet stays confidential until its date: work in the company’s Team workspace, or wait for the embargo to lift. Reread the numbers and the names one by one.

  1. In Claude, click the + button at the bottom left of the message box, then “Add files or photos,” and attach the press release.
  2. Paste the prompt below, with the page’s section and audience.
  3. Ask for your edits: “Shorten the lead,” “A more factual headline.”
  4. Paste the text into your content management system (CMS), check every date and every link, then have it approved by the department that sent the press release.

The prompt to copy

Help me publish a news item on the website of [organization], in the [section] section, for [audience]. From the attached press release, write the web version: a headline of 70 characters at most, a two-sentence lead, then the body in 300 words at most, broken up by three subheadings that each carry a piece of information. Short sentences, no press-release phrasing, the practical details ([date, place, contact, link]) grouped at the end. Add a 155-character description for search engines, a short URL slug, and three links to make to existing pages: [sections or pages]. Don’t change any number, name, or date, and flag anything in the press release that seems inconsistent.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • Nothing goes online without a human review and the name of the person who approves the content: generated text can get a date, a price, or a name wrong.
  • The site’s credentials (admin, hosting, database) are never pasted into an assistant. Neither are exports that contain visitors’ email addresses or IP addresses.
  • Every code change is tested off the live site first, with a backup and a way to roll back.
  • Cookie banner, legal notice, accessibility: AI helps prepare, and the person in charge of GDPR or in-house counsel approves.

Never hand this to AI

  • Letting an agent edit or publish on the live site on its own.
  • Writing the privacy policy or the terms and conditions with AI alone: these texts are binding on the organization.
  • Publishing a generated image without saying so, or a photo of a person whose permission you don’t have.
