What to check

The roadmap and unpublished usage numbers are company data: work in your employer’s Team workspace, not on a personal account.

Write a feature specClaude · “Projects”
  1. In Claude’s left sidebar, click “Projects,” then “+ New project.” Name it after the product.
  2. Add your spec template, two past specs, and the interview synthesis. Under “Set project instructions,” describe the product and its users in ten lines.
  3. Open a conversation in the project and paste the prompt below.
  4. Answer its questions, reread, then ask: “Give me a Word file.”

The prompt to copy

You are a product manager on [product]. Write the spec for [feature] following the project’s template. Context: [problem observed, for whom, how often]. Measurable goal: [metric and target value]. I want: the problem, the users concerned, what is in scope and what is not, the step-by-step flows, the edge cases, the open questions, and how to measure success. Before you write, ask me the five questions you are missing answers to. Don’t make up any number: write “to be confirmed.”

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • The decision stays yours. AI summarizes, drafts, and suggests. It doesn’t know what your company can afford not to do.
  • The roadmap, usage numbers, and customer names are company data: work in your employer’s team plan (Team, Business), not on a personal account.
  • User interviews contain personal data: GDPR applies. Ask for consent before taking notes, remove names before you upload, and delete the notes when the study is over.
  • Every user quote and every number gets checked at the source before it goes into a spec or a presentation.

Never hand this to AI

  • Replacing interviews with AI-simulated users: it will tell you what you want to hear.
  • Having it settle a priority: it knows neither your strategy, nor your technical constraints, nor your commitments to customers.
  • Sending a spec to the team without rereading it line by line.
