Canva or Gamma: which one for a presentation?
Updated November 3, 2026 · 6 min read
Gamma writes and lays out a whole presentation from a topic, notes, or a file: it is the most direct choice for a meeting deck. Canva starts from a design template and suits work where the look matters (brand kit, poster, social post); its AI turns a description into a design, but you still assemble the deck. Both have a free plan: try them on the same topic before you pay.

Anyone who has to present something and has neither the time nor the desire to spend an evening on layout.
See the Gamma pageCanva is an online design studio: you start from a template (poster, presentation, social post, document) and edit it with your mouse. Its assistant, “Canva AI,” creates a design from a description. Gamma is built around one move: you give it a topic, it proposes an outline, then writes and lays out every slide.
Both run in the browser with nothing to install. Both need a human check: an AI can invent a figure or botch a headline, and a deck for leadership or a client gets reviewed slide by slide.
The differences that matter
Prices and plans checked on the publishers’ pages, then reviewed in our tool profiles on October 19, 2026 for Canva and October 5, 2026 for Gamma. The prices below are the euro prices on the French sites; they change, so check the publisher’s page before you pay.
| Criterion | Canva | Gamma |
|---|---|---|
| Where you start | A design template, or a description given to Canva AI | A topic, pasted notes, or an imported file |
| What the AI does | Creates a design, writes text, generates an image or a short clip, resizes, translates | Proposes the outline, writes and lays out the slides, edits by chat with the Agent |
| Without paying | Over 1.6 million templates, 5 GB, a brand kit limited to 3 colors, up to 20 AI uses | 400 credits at sign-up, no refill, up to 10 slides per generation, “Made with Gamma” badge |
| Individual paid plan | Pro, €110 per year for one person | Plus, €8 per person per month, billed yearly (€96) |
| For a team | Pro+, €170 per year per person; Enterprise on quote | Pro, €18 per person per month; Business, $40 per member per month |
| Brand kit | 1 on the free plan, 5 on Pro, 100 on Pro+, with approvals | A theme with your company’s colors and logo from Pro |
| Getting the file out | Download the design, or share a link | Export to PDF, PowerPoint, PNG, and Google Slides; badge removed from Plus |
| Privacy by default | Your content is not used to improve the AI unless you allow it | On individual plans it can be used to train it, unless you turn the setting off |
Which one for which job
There is no absolute winner. The right choice depends on what you produce most often.
- A meeting or committee deck built from your notes: Gamma. Paste the meeting summary with “Paste,” it splits it into slides, and the Agent shortens whatever runs long.
- A poster, a brochure, a social post, an invitation: Canva. Visuals are its strength, with its templates and saved brand kit.
- A deck in the company’s brand: Canva from the Pro plan for colors and fonts; Gamma needs its Pro plan for a theme with your logo. If your company already has a Canva space, ask for a seat rather than paying yourself.
- An old deck to refresh: Gamma, which imports a PowerPoint file, relays it out, then exports it back to PowerPoint.
- Both: it is common. Gamma for the substance and structure, Canva for visuals used elsewhere (social media, an event poster).
If your company already works in PowerPoint, Microsoft Copilot builds the deck right inside it, and Claude produces a real PowerPoint file from your documents. For the whole path, from idea to file, read creating a presentation with AI, step by step.
The limits to know before you choose
- Gamma: the text stays generic if your prompt is vague. The PowerPoint export is not always faithful (rounded table corners, some gradients), and Google Slides does not keep the theme fonts. The 400 free credits do not refill.
- Canva: the free AI quota runs out fast, and the most advanced tools use more of it. You own your creations, but Canva does not guarantee exclusive rights to an AI-generated design: a similar result can come out for someone else.
- For both: do not put client data or contracts into a personal plan. Read what not to share with an AI at work.
The privacy setting to check on day one
Data can sit in the United States at both. The default setting is not the same.
- In Gamma: click your avatar at the bottom left, then “Settings” and the “Data Controls” tab, and turn off the use of your content for training.
- In Canva: open canva.com/settings/privacy-preferences and check that the AI-improvement option is still off (it is by default).
- For confidential content: ask your employer for Gamma’s Business plan or a Canva team space, where this setting is locked.
The test to run before you pay
Both free plans are enough to form an opinion. Take a presentation you actually have to make this week.
- Write the topic, the audience, and the number of slides, with no sensitive data. See how to ask an AI well.
- Send the same prompt to both: “8-slide presentation for a leadership committee: this quarter’s customer service review. Sober tone, one key figure per slide.”
- Compare: the time you spend fixing things, how well the layout holds, and the file you get when you export.
- Pay for only one of the two, the one you reopen without thinking about it.

Frequently asked questions
Canva or Gamma: which is faster for a presentation?
Gamma, when you start from a topic or notes: it proposes an outline, then lays out all the slides. With Canva, you build from a template or from a description given to Canva AI, then adjust by hand.
Is Gamma free?
Yes, with 400 credits at sign-up, no refill, up to 10 slides per generation, and the “Made with Gamma” badge on your creations. The Plus plan, €8 per person per month billed yearly, removes the badge and raises the limit to 100 slides per generation.
Is Canva free?
Yes. The free plan gives over 1.6 million templates, 5 GB of storage, a brand kit limited to three colors, and up to 20 AI uses. Canva Pro costs €110 per year for one person.
Can you export to PowerPoint?
Gamma exports to PowerPoint, PDF, PNG, and Google Slides, free plan included, with the “Made with Gamma” badge; tables stay editable in PowerPoint, but some layout details are simplified. For Canva, check the download options of your design.
Which one respects the company brand best?
Canva saves a brand kit (logos, colors, fonts): one on the free plan, five on Pro, a hundred on Pro+. In Gamma, a theme with the company’s colors and logo needs the Pro plan.
Is my content used to train the AI?
At Canva, not by default: you would have to allow it yourself. At Gamma, on individual plans, yes unless you turn off the “Data Controls” setting; Business and Enterprise plans exclude it.
