AI training for carpenters

AI doesn’t take a measurement or push a panel through the saw. It helps you between the site visit and the shop: cleaning up your measurements, writing the quote, preparing a cut list for you to check, requesting prices from suppliers, showing the client an idea of the result.

What to check

A signed quote commits you: dimensions, materials, prices, and VAT remain yours. Keep the required legal wording from your usual template, and don’t photograph anyone or any of the client’s documents.

Write the quote for a custom pieceClaude · On your phone: dictation and photos
  1. As you leave the client’s home, open Claude on your phone. Tap the microphone icon in the message box and dictate: the piece, the dimensions, the materials, the finish, the hardware, the installation constraints.
  2. Tap the + button, then “Add files or photos,” and attach the photo of your sketch and the photos of the room.
  3. Paste the prompt below and send. Answer the questions it asks.
  4. Copy the description into your quoting software, then enter the final dimensions, the prices, and the VAT yourself.

The prompt to copy

You’re helping me prepare the quote for a custom carpentry piece for a homeowner: [a built-in closet in an alcove, four hinged doors]. From my dictated measurements and the photos, write the description in four parts: fabrication (overall dimensions, materials and thicknesses as I stated them, finish, hardware), installation (floor protection, scribing to the walls, fasteners, adjustments), what is not included ([painting, electrical work, plaster repair, removal of the old unit]), and the terms (fabrication lead time, deposit, access). A description a client can understand, with no prices at all. Mark “to be confirmed” anything I didn’t specify, and don’t make up any dimension. End with the questions to ask the client.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • A dimension is measured on site and recalculated at the shop. The cut list, the quantities, and the prices remain yours, even when an assistant formatted them.
  • Trade standards, codes of practice (DTU in France), and manufacturers’ installation instructions come before an assistant’s answer, especially for a staircase, a railing, or a window.
  • A signed quote commits you and your ten-year builder’s liability insurance (mandatory in France). Materials, lead times, VAT: reread everything before you send it.
  • The client’s address and the photos of their home are personal data: ask for their consent before you give them to a tool or publish them.

Never hand this to AI

  • Cutting from a list an assistant prepared without recalculating every dimension.
  • Having an assistant size a staircase, a railing, a mezzanine, or any load-bearing structure.
  • Presenting an AI-generated image as the drawing of the piece or as one of your finished projects.
