AI training for masons

AI does not pour a slab or lay a wall. It helps with everything around the job: the scope of work in the quote, the materials list, the pre-construction condition report, the site meeting notes, the progress invoices.

What to check

A signed quote commits you and your ten-year builder’s liability insurance (mandatory in France): quantities, prices, and VAT stay yours. Foundations and rebar are decided with the soil report and the structural engineer, never on an assistant’s suggestion. Do not photograph any person or any of the client’s documents.

Write the scope of work for a masonry quoteClaude · On your phone: dictation and photos
  1. At the end of the visit, open Claude on your phone. Tap the microphone icon in the message box and dictate: type of structure, measurements taken, site access, soil type, existing work to demolish or repair.
  2. Tap the + button, then “Add files or photos,” and attach the photos of the site and the existing structure.
  3. Paste the prompt below and send. Answer the questions it asks.
  4. Copy the lines into your quoting software, then set the final quantities, the prices, and the VAT yourself.

The prompt to copy

You are helping me prepare the quote for [building a 20 m² addition in concrete block on a slab]. From my dictated notes and the photos, write the scope of work in job-site order: setup and protection, excavation and soil removal, foundations, slab, wall construction, bond beams and lintels, stucco, cleanup and demobilization. For each item: a description a homeowner can understand, the quantity and the unit, with no prices. Add the items I may have forgotten, marking them “to confirm,” and list separately what is not included: [soil report, structural design, framing, roofing, windows and doors]. End with the questions to ask the client. Do not make up any dimension, and do not suggest any footing size or reinforcement.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • You don’t ask an assistant about structure. Foundations, rebar, lintels, an opening in a load-bearing wall: the soil report, the structural engineer, and trade standards decide.
  • A signed quote and a final acceptance commit you and your ten-year builder’s liability insurance (mandatory in France). Quantities, prices, VAT, and deadlines: you set them and you write them.
  • Safety is checked on site. Instructions translated or summarized by a tool replace neither your own check of the scaffolding and shoring, nor the site’s safety documents.
  • Photos of a house and a client’s name and address are personal data. Put them in a tool only if it is useful, and publish nothing without consent.

Never hand this to AI

  • Having an assistant size a foundation, reinforcement, a lintel, or shoring.
  • Ordering concrete or blocks based on a calculation you have not redone.
  • Responding to a claim on your own with a text written by an assistant: notify your insurer first.
