AI training for house painters

AI doesn’t hold the roller and can’t judge a surface. It helps with the rest: the scope of work for the quote, the dictated measurements, an image of the room in the proposed color, the quantities to order, the job schedule explained to the customer.

What to check

A signed quote commits you: surface areas, prices, VAT, and the choice of products stay yours. A photo doesn’t tell you everything about a surface: your on-site inspection decides the prep. Don’t photograph any person or any of the customer’s documents.

Write the scope of work for a painting quoteClaude · On your phone: dictation and photos
  1. At the end of the visit, open Claude on your phone. Tap the microphone icon in the message box and dictate, room by room: surface areas, condition of the walls and ceilings, trim, the colors and finishes the customer wants.
  2. Tap the + button, then “Add files or photos,” and attach the photos of the damaged surfaces.
  3. Paste the prompt below and send. Answer the questions it asks.
  4. Copy the lines into your quoting software, then set the final surface areas, the products, the prices, and the VAT yourself.

The prompt to copy

You are helping me prepare the painting quote for [a three-room apartment, occupied during the work]. From my dictated notes and the photos, write the scope of work room by room, in the order of the job: protecting floors and furniture, surface prep ([washing, filling, skim coating, sanding, wallpaper removal]), primer coat, finish coats, trim and radiators, cleanup. For each item: a description that is clear for a homeowner, the surface area or the linear meters, the sheen of the finish ([matte, eggshell, satin]), with no prices at all. Add anything I may have forgotten, marking it “to be confirmed,” and list separately what is not included: [moving large furniture, plaster repairs, treating a damp stain]. End with the questions to ask the customer. Don’t make up any surface area.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • The condition of a surface is judged on site, by hand and by eye: moisture, adhesion, cracks. A photo sent to an assistant doesn’t replace your inspection.
  • The manufacturer’s technical data sheet comes before a tool’s answer: approved surfaces, thinning, times, safety. With old paint that may contain lead, the inspection reports and the regulations decide.
  • A signed quote commits you. Surface areas, prices, VAT, and the choice of products: you set them and you write them.
  • Photos of a home and a customer’s name and address are personal data. Nothing gets published without written permission.

Never hand this to AI

  • Having a color approved on an AI-generated image or on a screen, with no color chart and no test patch on the wall.
  • Asking an assistant whether a surface is sound, or what to do with old paint that may contain lead.
  • Writing a reduced VAT rate on a quote without checking its conditions on the official page.
