AI training for farmers

AI doesn’t drive the tractor or watch your animals. It lightens the evening paperwork: field work dictated at the edge of the field, certification standards to query, subsidies to spot, direct sales to organize.

What to check

This note is a memory aid: the regulatory record is kept in your usual tool, and you answer for what is in it. Dictation gets rates and product names wrong: reread them on the label. Wispr doesn’t work without a network connection, and the free plan stops at 1,000 words per week on phone.

Dictate the day’s field workWispr Flow · Dictation on your phone
  1. On your phone, open the notes app or the spreadsheet where you log your field work, and tap the text area.
  2. On iPhone, hold the globe icon on the keyboard and choose “Wispr Flow.” On Android, tap the “Flow” bubble.
  3. With the tractor stopped, dictate following the template below. The text comes out punctuated, without the hesitations.
  4. Reread the rates and the product names, then add those names in the “Dictionary” tab so they are spelled correctly next time.

The prompt to copy

Field work on [date], from [start time] to [end time]. Field: [name or block number], [area] hectares, crop: [crop, growth stage]. Work done: [seeding, spraying, spreading, harvest]. Product: [exact trade name], rate: [quantity per hectare], spray volume: [liters per hectare]. Reason: [what was observed]. Equipment: [tractor, implement, nozzles]. Conditions: [wind, temperature, humidity]. Operator: [first name]. Pre-harvest interval and re-entry interval: [to be read from the label]. To follow up: [date and point to check].

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • Spray records, subsidy application, livestock register: you sign and you answer for every line. AI helps you take notes and reread; it doesn’t fill out an official document for you.
  • A rate, a pre-harvest interval, a tank mix: the only source is the product label and its registration. Never an assistant’s answer.
  • A subsidy, a threshold, or a date found by AI must be checked in the official rules and with your advisor before you commit any spending.
  • Your accounts, your farm ID numbers, and the contact details of your customers and employees stay out of consumer AI assistants, or are hidden before you send anything.

Never hand this to AI

  • Asking an assistant which product to apply, at what rate, or what treatment to give an animal: that is the job of the label, your agronomist, and your veterinarian.
  • Having AI fill out your subsidy application or your records without rereading every line.
  • Deciding on an investment or a crop plan based on an assistant’s calculation you haven’t redone with your farm management advisor.
