AI training for winegrowers

AI doesn’t prune, spray, or make the wine. It lightens the load in the office and the tasting room: the tech sheet for a wine, the offer to an importer, the customer newsletter, the block log dictated at the end of the row, the appellation rules to look up.

What to check

Appellation, vintage, grape varieties, alcohol, “organic,” medal: everything on the sheet must match your declarations and your certificates. The assistant can add an aroma or a detail you didn’t give: reread line by line.

Write the tech sheet for a wineChatGPT · “Chat” mode
  1. Gather your cellar notes: grape varieties, blocks, harvest dates, winemaking, aging, lab analyses, bottling.
  2. In ChatGPT, in “Chat” mode, paste the prompt below, filled in with your numbers and your own tasting words.
  3. Fill in what it marks “to be completed,” then ask for “more restrained” or “shorter” until the text sounds like you.
  4. Compare each number with your analyses and your declarations, then copy the text into your sheet template.

The prompt to copy

Help me write the tech sheet for a wine, intended for wine shops and restaurants. My notes: appellation [name], vintage [year], grape varieties and proportions [list], soil and exposure [description], vine age [years], yield [hectoliters per hectare], harvest [by hand, dates], winemaking [description], aging [vessel, length], alcohol [number], bottling [date], number of bottles [number]. My tasting words: [your notes]. Write a one-page sheet: the estate in three lines, the vineyard, winemaking and aging, tasting notes from my words only, pairings, serving temperature, and aging potential. No superlatives, no health claims. Don’t invent any data: write “to be completed” when information is missing.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • Your registers are what count: sprays, harvest, cellar, customs declarations. AI helps you take notes and find things; it doesn’t fill out any official document for you.
  • In France, wine advertising is regulated by the Évin law: objective information about the product, and the health warning. Reread every text and every visual before you publish it.
  • Any claim on a sheet or a label (appellation, vintage, grape variety, alcohol, “organic,” medal) must match your declarations and your certificates. When in doubt, your appellation’s producer organization has the answer.
  • Your customer list and your seasonal workers’ paperwork contain personal data: none of that goes into a consumer assistant.

Never hand this to AI

  • Asking an assistant which product to apply, at what rate, or on what date: that is decided with the product label and your vineyard advisor.
  • Letting AI invent a tasting note, a medal, or the estate’s history.
  • Publishing an AI-generated image of vines or bottles as if it were your estate.
