AI training for private tutors

AI knows neither your student nor what’s holding them back. It prepares a first version of the session, the exercises, and the recap for parents, which you then adjust. You save your energy for the hour you spend beside them.

What to check

Describe the difficulty, not the person: no name, no school, no health information. Redo each answer key yourself, especially the calculations. The free plan is limited to 5 projects.

Prepare a student’s sessionClaude · “Projects”
  1. In Claude’s sidebar, click “Projects,” then “+ New project.” Name it by subject and grade, for example “9th grade math,” never by the student’s name.
  2. Under “Set project instructions,” write how you work: length of a session, share of exercises, tone with the student.
  3. Open a conversation in the project and paste the prompt below, filled in.
  4. Adjust the plan to what you know about the student, then ask: “Give me a one-page Word file.”

The prompt to copy

You help me prepare a tutoring session in [subject] for a student in [grade], lasting [1 hr 30 min]. Chapter covered in class: [chapter]. What is holding them back, from what I saw in the last session: [for example: they apply the formula without understanding where it comes from, they get lost in long problem statements]. Propose a timed plan: five minutes of questions to check what they know, an explanation approached differently from the class notes, three exercises of increasing difficulty with their answer key, and one exercise to do alone for next time. For each step, tell me the mistake to watch for and the question to ask to get them to reason out loud. Stay within the [grade] curriculum.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • Your students are most often minors: no name, no photo, no report card, no health or family information in a consumer assistant. Describe the difficulty, not the child.
  • You remain the teacher: every generated exercise and answer key gets redone by hand before it is handed out. An assistant can get a calculation wrong or go beyond the curriculum.
  • The class notes and tests from the student’s teacher belong to that teacher: use them for review, without distributing them.
  • Don’t promise parents a grade or a passed exam, and simply tell them how you prepare your sessions.

Never hand this to AI

  • Having it do the student’s homework, or grade in your place a paper you haven’t read.
  • Uploading a report card, a speech therapy assessment, or a school accommodation plan to an online tool.
  • Leaving the student alone with an assistant during the hour the parents are paying you for.
