AI training for production managers

AI doesn’t run a line. It makes sense of your downtime and scrap logs, cleans up a work instruction, structures a defect analysis, and writes up the action list from the morning meeting. The schedule, the priorities, and shop floor safety stay yours.

Julius for production managers: find a line’s top downtime causes, step by step

What to check

Julius can misread a column or wrongly merge two causes: check a known total before you share anything. The data is stored in the United States. A gap between shifts is something to discuss with them, not to judge from a chart.

Find a line’s top downtime causesJulius · Excel or CSV file, in the conversation
  1. Export the month’s downtime log from your tracking software: date, shift, machine, cause, duration in minutes.
  2. On julius.ai, click the + button to the left of the chat bar and choose the file. First ask: “Show me the first ten rows.”
  3. Paste the prompt below, with the exact names of your columns.
  4. Compare the total downtime minutes with the total in your own tracking, then present the chart at the team meeting.

The prompt to copy

Here is the downtime log for [line 2] over [four weeks]. Columns: [date, shift, machine, cause, duration in minutes]. Rank the downtime causes by cumulative duration, from heaviest to lightest, and draw a Pareto chart with the cumulative percentage curve. Give the number of stops and the average duration for each cause. Then compare shifts and days of the week, and flag any clear gap. If the same cause is written several ways, group it and tell me what you merged. Tell me how many rows you excluded, and why.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • A number from an assistant (OEE, scrap rate, load) gets recalculated on a line you know before it is posted or sent to management.
  • Safety and quality: a work instruction, a safety instruction, or a setting is approved through your document control system and verified at the workstation. AI formats; it does not approve.
  • Routings, run rates, drawings, and customer complaints are confidential. Use the company workspace, or remove customer names and sensitive part numbers.
  • Shift-level metrics are there to improve the shop floor, not to judge a person. No named data on operators without a framework agreed with human resources.

Never hand this to AI

  • Letting a tool decide the production sequence or a line shutdown.
  • Using a setting value, a tightening torque, or a safety instruction given by an assistant without the original manual.
  • Having AI evaluate an operator or name the person responsible for a defect.
