AI training for veterinarians

AI doesn’t examine an animal, make a diagnosis, or prescribe. It helps you write your client handouts, dictate your reports, keep up with the literature, and train the team. Your clients’ data stays in the clinic’s software.

What to check

The sheet doesn’t replace the prescription: medications, doses, and durations are written in your own hand. You approve every sentence. No client or animal names in the conversation.

Write post-surgery instructionsClaude · Word file, in the conversation
  1. Write down or dictate the instructions you usually give after this procedure, in your own words: rest, incision, cone, feeding, signs that should prompt a call.
  2. In Claude, paste the prompt below, followed by your notes. No client name, no animal name.
  3. Reread each line as if you were saying it at the front desk, and correct it.
  4. Ask: “Give me a one-page Word file.” The treatment lines stay blank: you fill them in by hand, from your prescription.

The prompt to copy

Help me format the instruction sheet my veterinary clinic hands out after [the procedure: a cat spay, a dog neuter, a dental cleaning under anesthesia]. Here is what we tell owners, in our own words: [your notes]. Write one page: that evening, the following days, the incision, the cone, feeding, going outside, then a “Call us if” box with the signs I gave. Short sentences, no jargon, a reassuring tone. Don’t add any medication, dose, timeframe, or advice that I didn’t give. Leave three blank lines labeled “Prescribed treatment,” which I will fill in by hand. End with the clinic’s phone number and the emergency number: [numbers].

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • Professional confidentiality and personal data: no client name, no address, no phone number, no animal identification number in a consumer tool. This data stays in the clinic’s software.
  • AI doesn’t examine, make a diagnosis, or prescribe. It finds a study or formats what you have decided: you examine the animal, you decide, and you sign.
  • Every dose, every withdrawal period, and every interaction is checked in the drug’s summary of product characteristics. An assistant can be confidently wrong.
  • Dictate a report with a model that runs on your computer. Every document handed to a client is reread line by line.

Never hand this to AI

  • Describing a case to it and asking for a diagnosis, a treatment, or a dose.
  • Uploading an X-ray, a lab result, a prescription, or a client record to an online tool.
  • Publishing a reply to a review that confirms someone is a client or mentions the care given to their animal.
