AI training for nurses

AI does not provide care, does not assess a patient, and replaces neither the prescription nor your judgment. It helps you find a protocol, write a patient handout, keep up with the research, and run the practice. No patient data goes into an online assistant.

What to check

It knows only what you upload: check that each protocol is the version in force. Describe a typical situation, never a real patient. For a facility’s internal documents, ask your nurse manager for approval before uploading them.

Find a point in a protocolGemini Notebook · “Chat” panel
  1. Gather as PDFs the approved protocols of your unit or your practice, and the official guidelines you use, in their latest version.
  2. Create one notebook per topic, for example “Wounds and dressings” or “IV lines.” In the “Sources” panel, click “Add” and upload the documents.
  3. In the “Chat” panel, paste the prompt below.
  4. Click each citation number to read the original passage before you act.

The prompt to copy

Using only the sources in this notebook, what do these documents call for in [the situation: for example maintaining an implanted port between two uses, monitoring an indwelling urinary catheter]? Give the steps in the order they are written, the supplies, the frequency, the monitoring points, and the cases where the physician must be notified. Cite the document, its date, and the page for each point. If two documents do not say the same thing, show both passages. If the sources do not cover the situation, write “not covered” without inferring anything.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • Professional confidentiality and health data: no name, no date of birth, no home visit address, no prescription or wound photo in a consumer assistant.
  • AI does not assess a patient and does not decide on any care. The prescription, the approved protocols, and your clinical judgment always take precedence.
  • Nursing notes are dictated with a model that runs on your computer, not online, and are written in the software intended for them.
  • Every dose, every flow rate, every dilution is checked at the source and recalculated. An assistant can be wrong with complete confidence.

Never hand this to AI

  • Asking it for a dose or flow rate calculation, or what to do about a patient’s condition.
  • Photographing a wound, a prescription, or a chart to upload it to an online tool.
  • Leaving at the patient’s home a generated handout that you have not reread line by line.
