Summarize a PDF with AI, without missing what matters
Updated October 9, 2026 · 6 min read
Upload the PDF to an assistant (ChatGPT, Claude) or to a tool that answers with the page number (Gemini Notebook, ChatPDF, Acrobat’s AI Assistant), then ask for a summary in a specific format: ten lines, five bullet points, a table. Most of them do it for free, with a daily limit. Before you reuse a figure, a date, or a clause, click the reference and reread the passage: a summary can miss an exception.
What AI does well with a PDF
A sixty-page report, a supplier contract, a request for proposals, a study in another language: AI reads the text and gives you the gist in a few seconds. The most useful part is not always the summary itself.
- Summarize in the format you choose: a paragraph, five bullet points, a table.
- Answer a specific question: “What is the notice period?” “Who pays for shipping?”
- Pull out the figures, dates, and obligations, with the page where each one appears.
- Read a document in another language and answer you in yours.
- Compare two versions or several documents on the same topic.
What it does poorly: guess what is not written, know that a rule has changed since the document came out, or read a poor-quality scan. It can also get the summary right and miss the exception written at the bottom of a page.
Which tool to use to summarize a PDF
Three families of tools, depending on what you need from the document. Plans checked on October 3 and 5, 2026 on the vendors’ pages, as shown from France.
| Tool | What it does with your PDF | Plan required |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Summarizes, answers questions, also reads Word files and spreadsheets | Free, with a daily limit; more files with Go, at $8 per month |
| Claude | Summarizes and compares long documents, can give you back a Word or PDF file | Free; the limit, which resets every five hours, runs out fast with large files |
| Gemini Notebook | Answers from your documents only, with a link to each passage; Audio Overview | Free: 50 questions and 3 Audio Overviews per day; Google AI Plus at €4.99 per month in France |
| ChatPDF | Questions and summary, each answer points to the page cited | Free: 2 documents per day |
| Acrobat, AI Assistant | Summary and questions with references, up to 600 pages and 100 MB | AI Assistant add-on: €6.04 per month incl. tax in France, one-year commitment |
| Smallpdf | Summary as soon as you upload, then questions; files up to 50 MB | Free, with limits; unlimited with Pro |
| iLovePDF | Short, medium, or long summary; no questions | Free in standard AI mode; Premium at $9 per month |
For a document you need to understand fast
A general assistant is enough: ChatGPT or Claude. Upload the file with the + button, ask your questions in the same conversation, and ask for what comes next: a summary email, a note for your manager, a table of the points to negotiate.
For a document where every word counts
Pick a tool that points to the page: Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM), ChatPDF, or the AI Assistant in Acrobat. Clicking the reference shows the original passage. For a contract, a standard, or a financial report, that is what lets you check in two seconds.
For a quick summary, without an account
Smallpdf summarizes the file as soon as you upload it, and its chat needs no sign-up. iLovePDF writes a summary of the length you choose, but doesn’t answer questions. Both delete files on their own: after one hour for Smallpdf, within two hours for iLovePDF, according to their privacy pages.
The method, in five steps
- Check that you can select the text in the PDF. If you can’t, it is a scan: run it through a text recognition tool first (see below).
- Upload the file to the tool you chose, with the + button or by dragging it into the window.
- Ask for a summary in a specific format, for a specific reader. The prompt below is a good start.
- Then ask the questions that matter to you: deadlines, amounts, what commits you.
- Open the page cited for each figure, date, or clause you are going to reuse.
A prompt to copy: “Summarize this document in ten lines for someone who hasn’t read it. Then list the figures, dates, and obligations it contains, with the page number for each one. If a piece of information isn’t in the document, say so instead of guessing.”
To adapt the request to your case, see how to write a good prompt.
A scanned, very long, or foreign-language PDF
A scan
A scanned PDF is an image: the tool sees no text, or reads it badly. First turn it into a PDF whose text you can select. iLovePDF’s “OCR PDF” tool does it for free, one file at a time; Acrobat Pro and Smallpdf Pro do it too. Choose the document’s language, then reread the figures: recognition makes mistakes on stamps, handwriting, and crooked pages.
A very long document
Acrobat’s AI Assistant accepts up to 600 pages. Smallpdf, on the free plan, stops at documents of 25,000 to 35,000 words. With Claude on the free plan, a large file uses up the limit fast. If the tool stops or skims the end, split the work: one summary per chapter, then a summary of the summaries.
A document in another language
Just write in your own language. ChatPDF answers in the language you asked in, from a document in German or Spanish, for example. With ChatGPT or Claude, add “answer in English.” For an exact quote, ask for the original sentence along with its translation.
What not to upload to just any tool
A client contract, a pay slip, a medical file, or a document marked confidential doesn’t go into a personal account. At work, use the tool your company provides: on ChatGPT Business and Claude Team, your content isn’t used for training by default.
- ChatGPT, personal account: your conversations can be used for training, unless you turn off “Improve the model for everyone” under “Settings,” “Data controls.”
- Claude, personal account: training only happens if you accepted it; the setting is under “Settings,” “Privacy.”
- ChatPDF: the document’s content is sent to OpenAI to produce the answers.
- Adobe states that your documents are not used to train its AI.
The details, tool by tool: what not to share with AI at work.
What Nova brings
Nova is subscription software. Each tool page says what the tool does with a document, on which plan and at what price, with the date it was checked. The job pages give the use cases specific to your work: reviewing a contract as in-house counsel, preparing a summary note as an independent consultant, going through documentation as an executive assistant, reading papers as an academic researcher. Frequently asked questions
Can you summarize a PDF with AI for free?
Yes. ChatGPT and Claude read a PDF on their free plans, with a limit. Gemini Notebook allows 50 questions per day, ChatPDF 2 documents per day, and iLovePDF summarizes for free in standard AI mode. Acrobat’s AI Assistant is paid, apart from a trial in Acrobat Reader: €6.04 per month incl. tax in France, with a one-year commitment.
Can ChatGPT summarize a 100-page PDF?
It reads the file, but the summary of a long document can skim over some parts. Ask for one summary per section, then an overall summary, and check the figures in the document. For a document you need to cite down to the page, a tool with references, such as Gemini Notebook or ChatPDF, is safer.
How do you summarize a scanned PDF?
First have the text recognized: iLovePDF’s “OCR PDF” tool does it for free, one file at a time, and so does Acrobat Pro. Once you can select the text, upload the file to the assistant of your choice and reread the figures.
Is the summary reliable?
It is often right overall, and can get a detail wrong: a figure, a date, an exception. Ask for the page number of each piece of information, and reread the passage before you reuse anything that commits you.
Can AI summarize a PDF written in another language?
Yes. Write your questions in your own language: ChatPDF answers in the language you asked in, and with ChatGPT or Claude you just add “answer in English.” For a quote, ask for the original sentence too.
Can you upload a contract to ChatGPT?
Not to a personal account, unless the contract contains nothing confidential. At work, use the workspace your company provides, such as ChatGPT Business or Claude Team, where your content isn’t used for training by default.
