AI training for legal assistants

AI does not give legal advice and does not track deadlines for you. It sorts exhibits, transcribes dictation, checks cross-references, and prepares first drafts, which the attorney or in-house counsel reviews and signs.

What to check

The free plan gives ten questions per week and erases the history after seven days: copy the answer the same day. A cited decision may not apply to the case: the attorney makes the call.

Do first-pass research for the attorneyOrdalie · Legal research, with cited sources
  1. Log in to Ordalie in your browser.
  2. Describe the situation with no names at all, with the dates, following the prompt below.
  3. Click each source to open the official text, and set aside the ones that do not match the case.
  4. Copy the answer and its links into a note for the attorney, saying what you checked.

The prompt to copy

In French [employment / commercial / lease] law, here is the situation, without names: [describe the facts in three sentences, with the dates]. The question is: [the attorney’s question]. Give the applicable articles, then the decisions of the Cour de cassation and the courts of appeal from the last five years, from most recent to oldest. For each decision: the court, the date, the number, the holding in one sentence, and the link. Flag decisions that go the other way.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • Professional secrecy: you are bound by it just as the attorney is. No exhibit and no client name in a personal account or a consumer tool.
  • You prepare, the attorney approves and signs. Anything that comes out of an assistant is presented to them as a draft, along with what you checked.
  • Every citation is checked at the source: open the article and the decision before passing them on.
  • Procedural deadlines are kept in the firm’s calendar and recounted from the statutes, never on an assistant’s word.

Never hand this to AI

  • Giving legal advice to a client, even through an email drafted by AI.
  • Calculating a procedural deadline or a limitation period.
  • Choosing which exhibits to disclose and the case strategy.
