What to check

The engagement letter carries the firm’s liability. Reread it against the standards of the professional body (the Ordre des experts-comptables in France): the CPA is the one who signs.

Draft the engagement letterClaude · Projects
  1. In Claude’s sidebar, click “Projects,” then “+ New project.” Name it “Engagement letters.”
  2. Add the firm’s engagement letter template and your general terms. In “Set project instructions,” write: “Always use the clauses from the template, without making any up.”
  3. Open a conversation in the project and paste the prompt below, replacing what is in brackets.
  4. Download the Word file, reread every clause, then have the CPA sign it.

The prompt to copy

Draft the engagement letter for a new client: [legal form, business, number of employees, tax regime]. The engagement covers [bookkeeping, review, annual financial statements, tax return, payroll, annual corporate filings]. Follow the structure and the clauses of the firm’s template uploaded to the project, without adding or removing any. Fees: [amount, frequency, how they are revised]. Flag in brackets every piece of information you are missing, then give me a Word file.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • Professional confidentiality: no client document in a personal assistant account. Use the firm’s team workspace, where content isn’t used for training, or remove the names.
  • AI prepares; the CPA decides and signs. Engagement letter, annual financial statements, attestation: the responsibility stays with the firm.
  • Any number taken from an assistant gets recalculated before it is said to the client or written in a file.
  • A tax or labor law text is checked at the source, as of its date. The rules change every year, and the assistant doesn’t always know.

Never hand this to AI

  • Settling on a tax position or an election for the client without having read the texts yourself.
  • Uploading clients’ pay stubs, IDs, or bank statements to a free tool.
  • Letting a follow-up or an automated letter go out without first rereading it.
