What to check

Make up the situation: don’t describe a real case, and don’t give any customer’s name. The goodwill gestures you offer in the role-play must be ones your company allows.

Practice a call with an angry customerChatGPT · Voice mode
  1. Open ChatGPT on your phone or on the web, outside your call-taking hours, and type the prompt below into the message box.
  2. Tap the voice icon in the message box, and pick up as you would at work, with your greeting.
  3. Answer out loud. You can interrupt it, just like on a real call.
  4. Say “feedback” to stop the role-play and hear its comments. Start over with another situation.

The prompt to copy

Play a customer on the phone who is very unhappy: [their order is three weeks late, they were charged twice, this is their third call]. I’m a call center agent at [type of company]. Start out strong, cut me off, threaten to cancel, and ask to speak to a manager. Calm down only if I restate your problem, apologize without justifying myself, and offer a specific action with a timeline. If I recite a stock phrase, get angrier. When I say “feedback,” stop the role-play and tell me the two moments where I brought the tension down, the two where I raised it, and a better sentence for each.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • You handle personal data all day: identity, contact details, sometimes bank or health data. None of it goes into a consumer assistant. Describe the situation, never the person.
  • Don’t install any extension or app on your computer without approval from your supervisor or IT. Use the tools your company provides first.
  • The caller must be told when the call is recorded or transcribed. So must you, and you should know what those recordings are used for.
  • A refund, a goodwill gesture, or a timeline announced to the customer commits the company. The procedure and your supervisor are the authority, not an AI answer.

Never hand this to AI

  • Reading an AI answer to the customer without opening the passage of the procedure it comes from.
  • Pasting the contents of a case, a screenshot of the customer record, or a card number into an assistant.
  • Letting AI decide on a refund, a cancellation, or an exception to the rule.
