What to check

You approve every sentence: the handout is your responsibility, and it replaces neither the prescription nor the maternity unit’s instructions. No patient name in the conversation. An assistant can write wrong advice with complete confidence.

Write the going-home handoutClaude · Word file, in the conversation
  1. Write down or dictate what you usually say on the topic, in your own words. No patient data is needed.
  2. In Claude, paste the prompt below, followed by your notes.
  3. Reread each sentence as if you were saying it at the home visit, and correct it.
  4. Ask: “Give me a one-page Word file, in large type,” then print a few copies for your visits.

The prompt to copy

You are helping me format a handout I give to parents, as a midwife, about [the topic: the first days at home, getting breastfeeding started, cord care, recovery after a C-section]. Here is what I usually say, in my own words: [your notes]. Write one page: what is normal, what you can do, then a box titled “Call me or call 15 (the medical emergency number in France) if,” with only the signs I gave. Short sentences, a reassuring tone, no judgment about the parents’ choices. Do not add any advice, any number, any medication, or any time frame I did not give. End with my number [number] and the maternity unit’s number [number].

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • Professional secrecy and health data: no name, no date of birth, no gestational age tied to a person, no test result or photo in a consumer tool.
  • AI doesn’t follow a pregnancy, doesn’t diagnose, and doesn’t prescribe. It finds a guideline passage or formats your words: you examine, you decide, and you sign.
  • Every medical number is checked at the source: gestational age, dose, threshold, time frame. An assistant can be wrong with complete confidence.
  • The referral letter is dictated with a model that runs on your computer. Any document given to parents is reread line by line.

Never hand this to AI

  • Describing a patient to it and asking for a course of action, a prescription, or whether to refer her to the maternity unit.
  • Uploading a report, an ultrasound, a lab result, or a fetal monitoring strip to an online tool.
  • Giving parents a generated handout that you have not reread and adapted to their situation.
