AI training for PR specialists

AI does not pick up the phone and does not know a single journalist. It prepares everything around the relationship: the first draft of the press release, the list of journalists to verify, the figure found in your documents, the monthly report. The contact remains yours.

What to check

Perplexity can attribute an article to the wrong author or cite someone who has moved to another outlet: open every link. On the free plan, only one “Research” report per month; “Pro Search” fills in, three times a day.

Find the journalists who cover the topicPerplexity · “Research”
  1. Open perplexity.ai. In the search field, open the mode selector and choose “Research.”
  2. Paste the prompt below, with the topic of your announcement and the type of media you are targeting.
  3. Click the small numbers: open each article to check that it exists, that it is recent, and that it really carries the byline of the person named.
  4. Add only the verified names to your media list, with the article that justifies the contact.

The prompt to copy

I am looking for journalists who have written about [specific topic] in [your country] over the last [six] months, in [the business press, the regional press of a given region, the trade press of a given industry]. For each one, give the name, the outlet, the beat, the headline and date of two articles on this topic with their links, and the angle he or she seems to favor. Present everything in a table, from closest to the topic to furthest. Do not include any email address or phone number. If you are not sure an article was written by this person, leave them out.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • Embargo and nonpublic information: until an announcement is out, it does not go into any consumer tool. For a publicly traded company, ask for the company’s rule first.
  • A quote commits the person quoted: no sentence written by AI is attributed to someone without their consent.
  • The media list contains personal data (names, emails, phone numbers): it stays in the agency’s tool, never in an assistant.
  • A false fact in a press release does lasting damage to a journalist’s trust: every figure, every date, and every name is checked at the source.

Never hand this to AI

  • Sending the same generated message to a whole list of journalists.
  • Making up a quote, a figure, or a piece of coverage to pad a press release or a report.
  • Handling a media crisis with an assistant: the response is decided with the client and, if needed, their legal counsel.
