AI training for SEO managers

AI doesn’t replace what you know about your readers, or content that’s actually useful. It sorts keywords, reads competing pages, makes sense of your Search Console export, and drafts briefs and tags. It’s also a new channel: your readers ask their questions there.

What to check

Visibility is measured on a sample of questions, and assistants don’t give the same answer twice. Read the score as a trend, not a ranking.

Check whether AI assistants cite your brandSemrush · Free AI visibility checker
  1. Open the free AI visibility checker, on semrush.com, under the free tools. No account is required.
  2. Enter your site’s address and run the check. Note the score from 0 to 100, the pages cited, and the topics where your brand appears.
  3. Run the check again with your main competitor’s site. You get three checks per day.
  4. Paste both results into your usual assistant, with the prompt below.

The prompt to copy

You’re helping an SEO manager read an AI assistant visibility report, run with Semrush. Our site: [address, business]. Our score: [score]. Pages cited: [list]. Topics where we appear: [list]. Competitor: [address]. Their score: [score]. Topics where they appear and we don’t: [list]. Tell me in five lines where the gap is. Then, for each topic where we’re missing, suggest the content to create or improve: the specific question the page should answer, the format (guide, comparison, FAQ), and the proof to provide. Rank by priority and explain your ranking.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • Published text commits the company: every number, every quote, and every promise in generated text gets checked at the source before it goes live.
  • A fully generated article, published with no review and nothing of your own, reads like everything else and hurts the site. AI prepares; a person who knows the topic writes or signs off.
  • Search Console and analytics exports are company data. Connect them to a third-party tool only with the site owner’s approval.
  • Borrowing a competitor’s outline doesn’t give you the right to reuse their text or images: copyright applies to online content too.

Never hand this to AI

  • Mass-publishing generated pages to cover keywords: it’s the surest way to damage the site.
  • Making up a customer review, a testimonial, an author, or a source to make content more credible.
  • Letting it choose the topics on its own: priority comes from what you sell and your readers, not from search volume.
