What to check

A cited source can be poorly summarized, out of date, or about a company with the same name. Open the link before you use a fact in a message: a wrong opening line does more harm than a plain message.

Find an opening line before contacting an accountPerplexity
  1. Open Perplexity, on the web or in the app. The search field is on the home page.
  2. Paste the prompt below, replacing what is in brackets.
  3. Click the number next to each sentence to open the original page. Keep only what you have verified.
  4. For the next account, write in the same conversation: “Same brief for [other company, city].”

The prompt to copy

I’m a sales development representative at [your company], which sells [your offering] to [target role]. I’m going to contact [the person’s role] at [company name, city]. Find what has happened at this company in the past [six] months: open positions, a new site, a new executive, a funding round, a new product, a public statement by this person. Give me three dated facts, each with its source, then for each one an opening line of twenty words at most that ties the fact to a problem my offering solves. Write “not found” rather than guessing, and don’t make up any numbers.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • In Europe, prospecting to business contacts is regulated: say who you are, write about a topic related to the person’s role, and always give them a simple way to opt out. Remove them from your lists as soon as they ask.
  • A prospect list is a file of personal data. Keep only what serves prospecting, use the tools approved by the company, and tell your GDPR contact before importing or exporting a large list.
  • Reread everything that goes out under your name. A message written by AI can get the company, the role, or the news wrong, and the mistake is repeated as many times as there are recipients.
  • A tool that automates LinkedIn acts with your personal account. Get your company’s approval before you hand over your login details, and stay under the recommended limits.

Never hand this to AI

  • Launching a sequence on a whole list without having reread the messages to the first twenty prospects.
  • Having AI invent a customer reference, a number, or a mutual connection to hook a prospect.
  • Pasting an export of the CRM or a contact list into a free assistant.
