AI training for videographers

AI doesn’t shoot for you. It transcribes the footage, helps you build a first rough cut, translates the subtitles, and turns the video into short formats. The eye, the pacing, and the choice of what stays in the edit are yours.

MacWhisper for videographers: log interviews from the transcript, step by step

What to check

MacWhisper transcribes on your Mac: nothing leaves the device. Once you paste the text into an online assistant, that is no longer true. Listen again to every line you keep: a transcript can distort a word. No Windows version.

Log interviews from the transcriptMacWhisper · Model marked “Speaker Recognition”
  1. Open MacWhisper and drag the files into the window: several files dropped together are transcribed one after another.
  2. In the sidebar, rename “Speaker 1” and “Speaker 2.” Fix proper names directly in the text.
  3. Export as .srt captions: each sentence keeps its timecode.
  4. To spot the strong lines, paste the text into Claude with the prompt below. If the video is confidential, stop at the previous step.

The prompt to copy

Here is the raw transcript of [three] interviews shot for a video about [topic], with timecodes. Each interview starts with its file name. Don’t rewrite anything. One: the outline of each interview, topic by topic, with the timecode where each topic starts. Two: the fifteen strongest lines, copied word for word, grouped by idea, with the file, the speaker, and the timecode. Three: a proposed story arc for the video in [six] beats, using only those lines. Four: what is missing to tell the story, which will have to be covered with footage or a voiceover. If a passage is unclear or seems badly transcribed, flag it instead of guessing.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • Image and voice rights: a written release from each person filmed, before the shoot. A client’s footage is confidential: prefer a tool that runs on your computer, or check the settings before you upload.
  • Tell the client what is generated, whether a shot, a voice, or music, and write it into the quote. In a documentary or a news report, nothing generated is presented as real footage.
  • Read the license before you deliver: several free plans prohibit commercial use, or put a logo or an audio watermark on the file.
  • Watch and listen to everything AI has cut, transcribed, or captioned: a wrong proper name or a clipped sentence puts you and the person filmed on the line.

Never hand this to AI

  • Cloning a person’s voice or animating their face without their written consent.
  • Uploading a client’s footage to a tool whose terms provide for training on your files.
  • Letting AI decide alone what stays in the edit: the meaning of an interview is made in the cut.
