AI training for opticians

AI doesn’t choose a lens or read a prescription for you. It takes on the writing around the sale: explaining a quote, following up with an insurer, preparing the window display. Your customers’ data stays in your store software.

What to check

No name, no prescription values, no prescription in the assistant: the sheet compares products, not a customer. Check every specification in the lens manufacturer’s catalog. The choice of eyewear remains your advice.

Explain a quote for progressive lensesClaude · Word file, in the conversation
  1. In the lens manufacturer’s catalog, note the specifications of the two pairs you are comparing: lens type, index, coatings, warranties, price.
  2. In Claude, paste the prompt below with these details. Do not include the customer’s name or prescription.
  3. Reread each line with the catalog in front of you, then ask: “Give me a one-page Word file.”
  4. Print the sheet and go through it with the customer. Keep it as a template for the comparisons that come up often.

The prompt to copy

You are helping me explain an eyewear quote to a customer who doesn’t know lens vocabulary. I am comparing two pairs of glasses. Pair 1: [lens type, index, coatings, warranties, price, out-of-pocket cost]. Pair 2: [same details]. Write a one-page sheet: a two-column table, one row per difference, with what it changes in everyday life (width of the field of vision, thickness and weight, reflections, night driving, screen work). Short sentences, no technical term without its explanation. Use only the specifications I give you: do not add any performance claim, any number, or any promise about eye health. End with three questions to ask the customer about their habits: [screens, driving, reading].

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • Professional secrecy: in France, an optician is a healthcare professional. Prescription, prescription values, insurer, social security number: no data that identifies a customer in a consumer assistant. It stays in your store software.
  • AI does not choose a lens, adjust a prescription, or judge one. It prepares a text or a table: you give the advice, and you are the one responsible.
  • Every lens specification, every price, and every warranty condition is checked in the supplier’s catalog or contract before it is given to a customer.
  • Customer list: write only to people who agreed to it, and never sort your sends by health data.

Never hand this to AI

  • Asking it which lens or which prescription suits a customer, or having it interpret a prescription.
  • Uploading a prescription, a customer record, a quote with a name on it, or an insurance claim form to an online tool.
  • Posting a reply to a review that confirms a person is a customer or mentions their eyewear.
