AI training for personal trainers

AI can’t see a movement and doesn’t know your clients. It helps between sessions: cleaning up the program you built, dictating a session recap, editing an exercise video, filling an open slot, sending the month’s invoice.

What to check

The assistant has never seen this person move: it formats, you decide. An injury, a medical condition, or a treatment has no place in the prompt. Check every number: a miscopied load goes out to the client.

Clean up a client’s programChatGPT · “Projects”
  1. In the ChatGPT sidebar, open “Projects” and create a “Programs” project. Add your template and your exercise list, with your own names. In the project instructions, write: “Do not add any exercise and do not change any load.”
  2. After seeing the person in a session, build your plan in notes, as usual.
  3. Open a conversation in the project and paste the prompt below, followed by your notes. No names, no health information.
  4. Check every load and every rep against your notes, then copy the table into your usual document.

The prompt to copy

Help me clean up a program I built after seeing the person in a session. Profile, no name: [40-year-old adult, back after two years off, three sessions per week, dumbbells and resistance bands at home]. Goal we set together: [goal]. Here is my plan over [four] weeks, in notes: [exercises, sets, reps, load or effort level, rest, progression from one week to the next]. Put it in a table, one session per block, with my one-line form cue for each exercise. Add a version for the client, with no jargon, with the warm-up and a checkbox per session. Do not change any exercise, any load, or any volume. If a progression looks inconsistent from one week to the next, flag it separately, without correcting it.

Ground rules

The rules to follow with AI in this job

Always do this

  • You are neither a doctor nor a physical therapist, and an assistant even less so: when faced with pain, a medical condition, or a treatment, you refer the person to a healthcare professional.
  • An injury, a pregnancy, a weight, or a treatment is health data. It stays in your own file, never in a consumer assistant, and never with a name.
  • The program is yours: AI formats what you decided after seeing the person move. Check every load and every rep.
  • No photo or video of a client without written consent, and no promise of results in your messages and posts.

Never hand this to AI

  • Having it write a program for someone the assistant has never seen, then handing it over as is.
  • Asking it for a meal plan, a diet, or supplements: that is a job for a dietitian or a doctor.
  • Describing a client’s injury to it to find out what to do: that is medical advice.
