Before you use AI for graded work, read what your school and your instructor allow: the rule changes from one school, course, and assignment to the next. After that, four habits protect you.
Why the rules come first
There is no single rule. One school allows AI for studying and bans it during exams. One instructor accepts it for finding leads and refuses it for writing. Another asks you to disclose every use.
For every graded assignment, know what’s allowed before you start, not after.
Where to find the rules
Your school’s AI policy often on the student portal or in the academic regulations
The exam regulations for proctored exams and take-home assignments
The assignment instructions or the syllabus they’re what count for that piece of work
The thesis or capstone guide for a thesis or an internship report
If nothing is written down, ask your instructor in writing, and keep the answer.
“For this paper, can I use an AI assistant to study, find sources, or check my spelling? Do I need to disclose it?”
Four habits that protect you
Cite AI when you’re asked to
The tool, the date, and what you asked it, in the format they expect. Write it down as you go.
Keep your drafts
Each version under a dated name, with your notes and outlines. They show how you worked.
Stay the author of your text
AI can quiz you and comment on your text. You do the writing, and you make the corrections.
Check every source in the original
An assistant can make up an author, a title, or a quote. Only cite what you’ve opened and read.
What helps you learn, and what replaces the work
Helps you learn
Replaces your work
Quizzing you on your course material, with a quiz or flashcards
Answering for you during an exam or a proctored test
Cleaning up your notes without adding anything
Writing a paper, a project, or part of a thesis you’ll turn in
Walking you through a concept you’re stuck on, step by step
Writing a book report on a book you haven’t read
Commenting on your text without rewriting it
Rewriting your text for you, sentence by sentence
Suggesting leads for sources, which you then check
Handing you a bibliography you never opened
The left column is not a permission slip: there too, your school’s and your instructor’s rules are what count.
When in doubt
1Reread the assignment instructions.
2Look for your school’s AI policy.
3Email your instructor before you start, and keep the answer.
4Until you hear back, do this assignment without AI.

No. Nova only checks that the address belongs to a school. Your questions and your work stay yours.
Nova teaches you to learn and write better yourself: notes, sheets, quizzes, an outline, checked sources. It never writes your work in your place. Your school’s rules come first.
